Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 2024 review – The gaming/multimedia laptop with Ryzen 8000 and G-Sync OLED

In our test, the new Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 made an exceedingly good impression. Although the predecessor model’s high performance has to make way for a thinner and slimmer case, this makes the device much more interesting for different audiences, too—and even if you don’t have any gaming ambitions and are simply on the hunt for a good multimedia laptop, then look no further than the new G14.

Its Ryzen processor may not offer any improved performance compared to its predecessor, however, it remains excellent in this TDP area. Together with its GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop and 120-Hz OLED including G-Sync, it’s just a lot of fun to play games on this compact device. At the same time, its speakers have been improved and a better sound system within a 14-inch laptop quite frankly can’t be found. Its slim case hasn’t had any negative effect on its wonderful keyboard and even its connectivity options are without compromise. Furthermore, Asus has managed to noticeably improve the laptop’s runtimes compared to the old model.

The new ROG Zephyrus G14 is currently likely the best all-round laptop on the market. Asus has combined a whole load of positive features inside a very high-quality and compact aluminum case with great input devices and impressive speakers. The only clear disadvantage is its soldered-on RAM.

The laptop’s biggest weakness is its soldered-on RAM, especially on the configurations which only feature 16 GB. Its hidden case screws are also a little confusing. Moreover, you could critique its comparatively low HDR brightness or the fact it doesn’t support Wi-Fi 7, which is already on board a lot of other newer laptops.

The new G14 is a serious competitor to the ZenBook Pro 14. Their performance and OLED screens are similar, but that device is even more high-quality, more compact and lighter. On the other hand, we don’t see the new model as being a competitor to last year’s Zephyrus G14, but more as an extension of the series for customers who may not need the maximum performance and would rather have a more lightweight device. The 2023 G14 still has a right to exist and Asus seems to think the same, as it is still available to purchase.

Then, of course, remains the comparison to the Apple MacBook Pro 14. As a gaming laptop, the Asus G14 has a clear advantage, as there are simply more games available for Windows. But the Zephyrus needn’t shy away from the MacBook when it comes to being used as a multimedia laptop, either. Aside from its better gaming performance, the G14 offers advantages in its keyboard and even its speakers—plus, it is better value for money. In turn, the MacBook is a much better choice if you work with a lot of HDR content or require long runtimes. Moreover, it can (for a high surcharge) additionally be had with a much faster M3-Max processor, lots more RAM and a bigger SSD (max. 128 GB RAM & 8 TB).
